2023 In Review

Dear Donors, Community Members and Friends,

2023 has been another exciting year for the Magellan Centre. Thanks to all of you we accomplished some amazing things. We have shovels in the ground and progress we can all see and feel now. After years of hard work behind the scenes we can all now walk by our site at 640 Lansdowne Avenue and see real progress.

As we approach the end of the year we wanted to take a minute to share some of the highlights from 2023 and to wish each of you and your families the very best for the holiday season. It is your continued support that makes all of this possible!

Our Groundbreaking Celebration

On September 16th we held our groundbreaking event on a beautiful sunny morning. We had a number of special guests including the Portuguese President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the Mayor of Toronto, Olivia Chow, our very own Charles Sousa and many more. Our media partners graciously showed up to ensure the event got as much coverage as possible. There was an unmistakable sense of excitement in the air as we celebrated this very important milestone.

As we write this update we are actively reviewing competitive tenders from trades and selecting partners for the building. A special thank you to our construction development manager, Richard Ramos, for his patience and diligence in ensuring this is kept moving in the most transparent, fair and efficient manner.

We were excited to add Global Waste Services Inc. to this list with their $35,000 donation towards their new $100,000 pledge and grateful for the one-time major donations made by the Alliance of Portuguese Clubs and Associations of Ontario ($25,000), 70 Years Canada ($50,000), and LiUNA Local 183 in honour of Jack Oliveira ($175,000).

Just as importantly we saw meaningful support coming in from the wider community with over 1000 donations made online on our website and social media. In November we launched our “Magellan Casinhas” campaign that will bring awareness and make donating easier and more accessible for anyone in our community. Look for our “Casinhas” at your favourite Portuguese-Canadian business and make a donation. Every dollar matters and we thank each of you from the bottom of our hearts.

We recruited an amazing group of volunteers to join our marketing & communication committee and our fundraising committee and held a kickoff meeting on November 23rd. Thank you to Naomi Couto, Joe Da Silva, Denise Fernandes, Krystle Ferreira, Carmo Monteiro, Chiara Picão, Jorge Ribeiro, and Anabela Taborda for dedicating their precious time to help us raise awareness and funds!

We look forward to sharing more regular updates with you in the future. If you are not already doing so, please take a minute to connect with and follow us (@Magellan CommunityCharities) on your favourite social media site.
