TORONTO, ON – December 7th, 2022 – Today, Magellan Community Foundation (MCF) announced that as the 2022 calendar year comes to an end, the Magellan Centre has received a series of monumental donations.
LIUNA Local 183, North America’s largest construction local union has graciously donated $1,000,000 over the span of four years with a $250,000 donation this year for the construction of the Magellan Centre, Canada’s first and only seniors long-term care home in Canada, devoted specifically to Portuguese-speaking seniors.
“LIUNA 183 is pleased to support this initiative and the first of its kind for the Portuguese-speaking seniors in Ontario. Our donation will help Magellan Community Foundation get one step closer to building this home for our seniors” says Jack Oliveira.
New Canadians Lumber has also generously donated $500,000 to help build the Magellan Centre. “We hope that our donation will encourage other Portugueses Businesses to donate as well”, says Edgar Gabriel, New Canadians Lumber.
Also, earlier this fall, the Portuguese Cultural Centre of Mississauga donated $52,500 as proceeds from their recent Community Spirit Award event in honour of Manuel Da Costa, Magellan founding director.
“With every donation, we are one step closer to making the Magellan Centre a reality for our community. Our sincerest thanks to LIUNA 183, New Canadians Lumber, and the PCCM for believing in and supporting this much-needed project. Your generosity will help with the building of this urgent home to support and care for Portuguese-speaking seniors in Ontario for years to come,” says Ulysses Pratas, Chair, Magellan Community Foundation.
Located in the heart of Toronto, the Magellan Centre will be the first long-term care home for Portuguese-speaking seniors; and affordable housing residences with a community hub for social gatherings.
